Where this number comes from

The chosen standard’s LMS parameters turn the height into a z-score, then a percentile.

Step by step

Age in months comes from the birth date and the measurement date. The chosen standard supplies L, M and S for that month; Cole’s LMS formula turns the height into a z-score, and the normal distribution turns that into a percentile. Ages between two rows are interpolated rather than rounded to a whole month.

What this number cannot tell you

A single measurement describes this moment — not a trend, and not adult height. A low percentile is not a diagnosis and a high one is not a clean bill of health. It places one number among peers, and that is all it does.

An example

A boy of exactly 3 years measuring 96.5 cm falls at the 54th percentile on the WHO standard: about 54% of boys that age are shorter.

Common questions

Why is there no number?
There is no figure here that can be given with confidence, so none is given. The normal range for questions like this is wide anyway — a few minutes with a paediatrician or dentist usually settles it.
What if my child’s age or country is not covered?
It will say plainly that this age is not covered, rather than borrow figures from another age or another country. How far a standard reaches is set by whoever published it, and stretching it gives a placing that is simply wrong.
